Joe Schultz

For 35 years I have been a commercial artist, operating my own art studio for 34 of those years. I served as art director for several national firms and an on staff art director for two years with South Bend Toy, a Milton Bradley company. In the early 1980s my interests in illustration work led me working in the area of fine arts. The talents of artists and illustrators such as Robert Heindel, Mark English, and most notably Bernie Fuchs inspired me. After attending their workshops and seminars, my painting career was underway. Thirty-four years later, I have retired from commercial work and am enjoying painting more than ever. As a member of the Hoosier Salon and Northern Indiana Artists, I am experiencing success in sales and have garnered awards at shows. Most recently my painting of Old Ironsides, “Sun Lights the Cannons,” was accepted as one of the top 200 in the U.S. National Parks Competition. My favorite subjects include landscapes and people, and subjects with strong lighting are always attractive to me. My choice of medium is oil on canvas. I appreciate the luminescence and versatility of oils and work in a style of oil washes and “wiping out” the highlights. Portrait commissions are considered and I am currently working on paintings of Michigan’s west coast light houses. Watch for further details.
